Newspapers are fantastic sources of genealogical and family history information. Birth, marriage, and death announcements, and obituaries, are commonly used items for genealogy. However, ancestors mayalso be mentioned in articles reporting on local news and events (i.e. social, community, school, sport, or business related events).

The Evening World
Publication: New York, New York, New York, USA
Date: Aug 15 1905
Text: "...Miss Ida Ldobold of No 121 Ellerystreet whose knee Is broken David Warner of No 22 Seventh avenue sprained knee Samuel Greenstone of No 41 Union avenue broken wrIst Henry Ryan of No CO New York avenue ..."
About this sourceThe New York Evening World owed its existence to the competition between Joseph Pulitzer and Charles A. Dana, publisher of the New York Sun. The two men were bitter rivals. Pulitzer purchased the New York World in 1883, pledging to dedicate his newspaper to the 'cause of the people.' This morning daily featured exposés of the sordid conditions of New York's tenement houses and championed the cause of European immigrants to this country. Four years later, the New York World was the most profitable newspaper in the city. In March 1887, Dana intensified the competition by introducing the Evening Sun. By October, Pulitzer had responded, coming out with the one-cent Evening World; however, he was never happy with this upstart publication, known derisively within the World offices as "Junior."Despite the lack of attention from Pulitzer, the New York Evening World prospered. By the mid-1890s it had a circulation of 340,000 and had attracted the attention of William Randolph Hearst, who soon supplanted Charles Dana as Pulitzer's major competitor. In 1895, Hearst acquired the New York Journal, a morning daily, and a year later began a late edition called the Evening Journal. Within a year, Evening Journal's sensationalism had attracted a large following, bringing the paper's circulation almost even with Pulitzer's nighttime edition. Such intense competition for readersled the two publishers to embrace "yellow journalism," and they competed over which evening paper would be the most strident, shrill, and loose with the facts. In 1898 Pulitzer hired Charles E. Chapinto run the Evening World. As editor, Chapin embraced the sensational, showing little empathy for the victims of the mayhem featured in his paper. Only once, after the September 1901 assassination of President William McKinley, did the World take a solemn tone, and this was near the beginning of Chapin's tenure. From then on, the editor took a no-holds-barred approach to the news. He reveled, for example, in accounts of the 1904 General Slocum steamboat fire on the East River, which cost 1,000 lives, and, six years later, rejoiced at getting an exclusive photograph of the assassination attempton Mayor William Jay Gaynor. He had little tolerance for timid editors or writers, firing those who ran afoul of his iron rule, and the paper's staff loathed him. In 1918, however, fate caught up withChapin, when, facing financial insolvency and mental instability, he murdered his wife. Unable, or perhaps unwilling, to commit suicide, he instead became the ironic figure of disdain in his own newspaper's headlines. The acerbic editor ended his days incarcerated at Sing Sing, editing the prison newspaper and planting roses; he died in 1930.Meanwhile, Pulitzer had died in 1911, and his sons assumed ownership of his newspapers. By 1930s, however, readership of Pulitzer's morning and evening editions had shrunk considerably. When the Scripps-Howard syndicate purchased the World properties in 1931, its managers stopped the presses and dismissed the staff. There was only one small consolation: Scripps-Howard added the World name to its afternoon paper, the Evening Telegram, renaming that publication the New York World-Telegram

Federal census takers were asked to record information about every person who was in each household on the census day. A census taker might have visited a house on a later date, but the information hecollected was supposed to be about the people who were in the house on the census day. The basic census enumeration unit was the county. Each county was divided into enumeration districts, one for each enumerator. The completed forms were sent to the Commerce Department's Census Office in Washington, D.C.Federal censuses are usually reliable, depending on the knowledge of the informant and the care of the census enumerator. Information may have been given to a census taker by any member of the familyor by a neighbor. Some information may have been incorrect or deliberately falsified.

This content comes from an index to marriages by brides and a separate index to marriages by grooms. The records published here have, in most cases, been joined to unify the information of the brides and the grooms in their respective marriages. The collection has a small number of records which could not be matched and joined together. The original indexes also contain some duplicate records w
The below paragraphs are provided to assist in understanding the information listed in the “State File No.” and “Place of Marriage” columns, as shown on the index images. Please note that MyHeritage has used this information to correctly interpret and display these fields in this collection.

From 1915 to 1919 the State File Number represents the volume and certificate number. The first two digits represent the volume number. The last three digits represent the certificate number. The certificate number resets each year. The Place of Marriage code is not listed in this year range. The original records are available on microfilm at the New Jersey State Archive and are organized alphabetically by the groom’s surname and the year of marriage.

From 1920 to 1929 the index displays a two digit number which represents the county where the marriage took place. The original records are available on microfilm at the New Jersey State Archive and can be requested with the Groom’s surname and the year of marriage.

From 1930 to 1964 the place code is written as a four to six-digit number. In order to find the code you truncate the last one to two digits making this a four-digit number. Begun in 1935 by the Social Security Act signed into law by FDR, more than thirty million Americans were registered for the economic security sanctions by 1937. From 1937 to 1940, payments were made in one-lump sums amounts with the first amount being seventeen cents. Following amendments in 1939, the payments turned into monthly benefits and increased. Following further amendments in 1950, cost-of-living increases were awarded to those who were receiving benefits. From 1950 to the present, benefits have increased yearly in response to inflation concerning the costs of living.

What can you find in the census?Census returns can help you determine who your ancestors were, and can also tell you:- Where your ancestors were living- Who they were living with- What their occupations were- If they had any servants- Who their neighbours were- If they had any brothers and sisters- What their ages were at the time of the census- If they had any disabilities. As well as giving you the above information, the fact that census returns are taken every ten years also allows you to track the movements of your ancestors through time as they perhaps move house, get married, have children or even change occupations. The fields which have been transcribed for the census are:- First name- Middle name- Last name- Sex- Birth place- Age- Place of residence- County- Relationship to head of householdWhy this collection is so valuableCensus records are valuable since they can tell you where a person lived at a certain place and time. Censuses were conducted by the federal government and will offer a variety of information, depending on year. Census records can answer questions like where your ancestors were living at the time the census was taken, who they were living with, what their occupations were, who their neighbors were, if they had any brothers and sisters, what their ages were at the time of the census and if they had any disabilities.Searching the censusThe golden rule of family history is to check the original historical record, or 'primary source', wherever possible. We have provided clear images of the original census enumeration books for you toview once you've found the right family in the indexes. When using census returns you should first search the transcriptions to help locate your ancestor in the census, and then view the original images to validate your findings. It will also help you see the household in the context of surrounding households. This is particularly important as transcribing an entire census is a huge and difficulttask, and whilst we have used the expertise of our transcribers and the experience of key representatives from the genealogy community to help us translate the records, it is inevitable that there will be some errors.Next stepsWith the information you gain from these census records, you will have the information you need to search for vital records in the locality where you found your ancestor. Also, the fact that census returns are taken every ten years also allows you to track the movements of our ancestors through time as they perhaps move house, get married, have children or even change occupations.

11168. “1901 England & Wales Census,” MyHeritage, Collection, 10156, MH:S500063.

11171. “U.S. Social Security Death Index (SSDI),” MyHeritage, Collection, 10002, MH:S500007.

What is in the 1911 census? In common with the censuses that preceded it, it recorded the following information:- Where an individual lived- Their age at the time of the census- Who (what relatives) they were living with- Their place of birth- Occupation- Details of any guests on the night of the census- Details of any servants they hadAlso, depending on an individual's circumstances, additional information could include:- Whether they were an employee or employer- Precise details of the industry or service they worked in- Details of nationality- Duration of their current marriage- Number of children born to that marriage- Number of children still living, and the number who had died- Details of any illnesses or conditions each family member had, and the date these beganFertility in marriage and occupational dataIn response to government concerns the 1911 census also asked additional, more specific questions to each household, about fertility in marriage and occupational data. The 1911 census and the suffragettesFrustrated with the government's refusal to grant women the vote, a large number of women boycotted the 1911 census by refusing to be counted. There were two forms of protest. In the first, the women(or their husbands) refused to fill in the form, often recording their protest on the household schedule. In the second, women evaded the census by staying away from their home for the whole night, and so did not lodge their protest on the household schedule. In both cases, any details relating to individual women in the households will be missing from the census. For the family historian, a refusal to fill in the form (accompanied by a protest statement) at least registers the presence of a woman, or women, in the household. But the women who evaded the count by leaving their home for the night are entirely untraceable via the census. The exact number of women who boycotted the census is not known, though some people have estimated that it may be as many as several thousand.DC Thomson Family History service provided to MyHeritage members by agreement with The National Archives, London.

The 1939 Register was conducted in ways like a census and includes similar information. One important difference for genealogists is the full date of birth is recorded in the 1939 Register for each person whereas the traditional censuses conducted in England and Wales only records each person’s age.The information in this collection was gathered under the authority of the National Registration Act of 1939 – an emergency measure at the start of the Second World War. 65,000 enumerators deliveredthe forms ahead of the official registration day. On Friday, 29 September 1939 (National Registration Day) householders were required to record the requested information on the supplied forms. On thefollowing Sunday and Monday local enumerators visited every household, checked and gathered the completed forms, and issued identity cards to each of the residents in the household.Of the 42 million individuals who are recorded in this collection, 8.2 million records remain closed due to privacy protection requirements, and about 700,000 additional records appear without full names. Records are closed for those individuals who were born less than 100 years ago unless matched to a registered death record. These closed records will be made public and added to this online collection on a yearly basis going forward.* The 1921 Census has not yet been released and is expected to be available online in 2022. The 1951 Census is closed until 2052.
