10003. “United States World War I Draft Registrations, 1917-1918,” MyHeritage, Collection, 10513, MH:S500006.
When the United States declared war on the German Empire on April 6, 1917 its standing army was comprised of approximately 100,000 men with another 115,000 in National Guard units. President Wilson immediately directed the Department of War to work to increase the army to a one million-man force. However, six weeks after war was declared only 73,000 new recruits had volunteered for military service.Military planners and political leaders had correctly anticipated the general apathy in the nation for the war effort at its onset and almost as soon as war was declared work began in the US Congress to enact updated conscription legislation. Congress passed the Selective Service Act on May 18, 1917. This act authorized the federal government to raise a national army through compulsory enlistment. The initial Selective Service Act required all men aged 21 to 30 to register. In August 1918, at the request of the War Department, Congress amended the law to expand the age range to include all men aged 18 to 45.Three specific registrations were conducted: * June 5, 1917. This first registration was for all men between the ages of 21 and 31. * June 5, 1918. The second registration was for those who had turned 21 after June 5, 1917 and a supplemental registration included in the second registration was held on August 24, 1918, for those who turned 21 years old after June 5, 1918. * September 12, 1918. The third, and final registration was for all men aged 18 through 45 not previously enrolled. By the end of the First World War, some 2 million men had volunteered for military service and 2.8 million other men had been drafted. Accordingly, a draft registration does not imply that the individual ended up being drafted or that he didn’t volunteer separately. The handwriting on the card is normally that of a registration board worker usually labeled the “registrar”. However, almost all cards contain the signature or “mark” in the handwriting of the registrant himself.

Early passenger lists were single page manifests and recorded minimal information about passengers. Over time forms were standardized and additional questions were added. Depending on the year, information recorded about a passenger may include name, age, gender, occupation, destination, and information regarding place of origin—e.g. native country, citizenship status, race, nationality, birthplace, or last residence. By 1907 passenger manifests contained 29 columns and were two-pages wide with left and right sides. These left and right sides appear as separate images, so be sure to use the"previous" and "next" arrow buttons in the image viewer in order to see all pages that pertain to a record. Two questions that were included on the manifest beginning in 1907 were: 1) name and address of nearest friend or relative in country whence the alien came; and 2) whether going to join a relative orfriend, and if so, what relative or friend, and his name complete address. MyHeritage has indexed the names and relationships of the individuals referenced in these two additional questions, making MyHeritage the only place where these additional names are searchable.Records in this collection come from National Archives (NARA) microfilm collections M237 (<i>Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York, New York, 1820-1897</i>) and T715 (<i>Passenger and Crew Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York, New York, 1897-1957</i>).

Federal census takers were asked to record information about every person who was in each household on the census day. A census taker might have visited a house on a later date, but the information hecollected was supposed to be about the people who were in the house on the census day. The basic census enumeration unit was the county. Each county was divided into enumeration districts, one for each enumerator. The completed forms were sent to the Commerce Department's Census Office in Washington, D.C.Federal censuses are usually reliable, depending on the knowledge of the informant and the care of the census enumerator. Information may have been given to a census taker by any member of the familyor by a neighbor. Some information may have been incorrect or deliberately falsified.

Begun in 1935 by the Social Security Act signed into law by FDR, more than thirty million Americans were registered for the economic security sanctions by 1937. From 1937 to 1940, payments were made in one-lump sums amounts with the first amount being seventeen cents. Following amendments in 1939, the payments turned into monthly benefits and increased. Following further amendments in 1950, cost-of-living increases were awarded to those who were receiving benefits. From 1950 to the present, benefits have increased yearly in response to inflation concerning the costs of living.

We undertook the arduous task of deciphering the handwritten pages of the 1940 Census to create a searchable index for the census. This was accomplished gradually, state by state, as we covered more and more of the census. As required by the US Constitution, the census is a federal mandate to count every resident of the United States of America every 10 years. Census data is released to the public 72 years after it wastaken.Federal census takers were asked to record information about every person who was in each household on the census day.

Civil registration—the government recording of births, marriages, and deaths—began in England and Wales on 1 July 1837. Local registration districts had jurisdiction for recording civil events, but were required to send copies of their records each quarter to the General Register Office (GRO) in London. The GRO created indexes to these records which are organized by event, year, and quarter, and thereunder alphabetically by surname. This collection contains the marriage index for 1866 to 1920, and 1984 to 2005. Images of the index are available for 1866 to 1920.The index provides the name of the bride or groom, registration district, and reference information (volume and page numbers). Brides and grooms are both included in the index, but are listed separately under their own individual entries.Information provided in the index can be used to order a copy of the person’s marriage certificate for a fee from the GRO through their Certificate Ordering Service. Depending on the year, full marriage certificates may provide: marriage date and place, names of the bride and groom, their ages, marital status, professions, and residences. Information about the bride’s and groom’s fathers—names, occupations, and whether deceased—may also be listed. A marriage record typically indicates whether the marriage ceremony took place in a church and if so, the denomination.Note: For years where images of the index are available, be sure to consult the image to verify the information presented to you. Sometimes errors happen during the transcription process. For example,a "5" may have inadvertently been transcribed as a "3". Since there is a fee for ordering certificate copies from the GRO, it is especially important to make sure all reference numbers are correct before placing an order.Search tip: If an individual had multiple given names, sometimes only one or two of these names was recorded in the index. In addition, some of the given names may have been recorded by initials only.If you’re having trouble locating someone in the index, try searching by any of the individual’s known given names, initials, or nicknames.

<b>What can you find in the census?</b>Census returns can help you determine who your ancestors were, and can also tell you:- Where your ancestors were living- Who they were living with- What their occupations were- If they had any servants- Who their neighbours were- If they had any brothers and sisters- What their ages were at the time of the census- If they had any disabilities. As well as giving you the above information, the fact that census returns are taken every ten years also allows you to track the movements of your ancestors through time as they perhaps move house, get married, have children or even change occupations. The fields which have been transcribed for the census are:- First name- Middle name- Last name- Sex- Birth place- Age- Place of residence- County- Relationship to head of household<b>Why this collection is so valuable</b>Census records are valuable since they can tell you where a person lived at a certain place and time. Censuses were conducted by the federal government and will offer a variety of information, depending on year. Census records can answer questions like where your ancestors were living at the time the census was taken, who they were living with, what their occupations were, who their neighbors were, if they had any brothers and sisters, what their ages were at the time of the census and if they had any disabilities.<b>Searching the census</b>The golden rule of family history is to check the original historical record, or 'primary source', wherever possible. We have provided clear images of the original census enumeration books for you toview once you've found the right family in the indexes. When using census returns you should first search the transcriptions to help locate your ancestor in the census, and then view the original images to validate your findings. It will also help you see the household in the context of surrounding households. This is particularly important as transcribing an entire census is a huge and difficulttask, and whilst we have used the expertise of our transcribers and the experience of key representatives from the genealogy community to help us translate the records, it is inevitable that there will be some errors.<b>Next steps</b>With the information you gain from these census records, you will have the information you need to search for vital records in the locality where you found your ancestor. Also, the fact that census returns are taken every ten years also allows you to track the movements of our ancestors through time as they perhaps move house, get married, have children or even change occupations.
10181. “1911 England & Wales Census,” MyHeritage, Collection, 10446, MH:S500061.
<b>What is in the 1911 census?</b>In common with the censuses that preceded it, it recorded the following information:- Where an individual lived- Their age at the time of the census- Who (what relatives) they were living with- Their place of birth- Occupation- Details of any guests on the night of the census- Details of any servants they hadAlso, depending on an individual's circumstances, additional information could include:- Whether they were an employee or employer- Precise details of the industry or service they worked in- Details of nationality- Duration of their current marriage- Number of children born to that marriage- Number of children still living, and the number who had died- Details of any illnesses or conditions each family member had, and the date these began<b>Fertility in marriage and occupational data</b>In response to government concerns the 1911 census also asked additional, more specific questions to each household, about fertility in marriage and occupational data.<b>The 1911 census and the suffragettes</b>Frustrated with the government's refusal to grant women the vote, a large number of women boycotted the 1911 census by refusing to be counted. There were two forms of protest. In the first, the women(or their husbands) refused to fill in the form, often recording their protest on the household schedule. In the second, women evaded the census by staying away from their home for the whole night, and so did not lodge their protest on the household schedule. In both cases, any details relating to individual women in the households will be missing from the census. For the family historian, a refusal to fill in the form (accompanied by a protest statement) at least registers the presence of a woman, or women, in the household. But the women who evaded the count by leaving their home for the night are entirely untraceable via the census. The exact number of women who boycotted the census is not known, though some people have estimated that it may be as many as several thousand.DC Thomson Family History service provided to MyHeritage members by agreement with The National Archives, London.

The England & Wales Index to Grants of Probate and Letters of Administration, 1853-1943, collection spans an important development in English probate law. Prior to 1858, grants of probate and lettersof administration fell under the jurisdiction of the ecclesiastical courts of the Church of England: primarily the Prerogative Court of York and the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. This collection contains an index of grants of probate and letters of administration made in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury from 1853 to 1857. As the highest ecclesiastical court, the Prerogative Court of Canterbury was responsible for probating the estates of an individual meeting any of the following criteria:<ul><li>High level of personal wealth</li><li>Property in more than one diocese in the Province of Canterbury</li><li>Property in both the Province of York and the Province of Canterbury</li><li>Diedoutside of England, but owned property in England</li></ul>Therefore, it was very uncommon for an individual to have enough wealth or property for a grant of probate or letter of administration to be made in the Court of Canterbury. If an individual is foundin the Grants of Probate and Letters of Administration made in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, it may be possible to find a copy of their will at the <a href="http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-...8/">National Archives of England</a>.The Court of Probate Act of 1857 created a new civil court that centralized all grants of probates and letters of administration, effectively transferring all jurisdiction from the ecclesiastical courts of the Church of England to Her Majesty’s Court of Probate. The majority of records in this collection are dated after 1857 and were therefore administered in the Court of Probate. Even though this act centralized the administration of estates, it was still uncommon for an individual to leave a will to be probated. Therefore, this collection remains a good substitute for, or supplement to, the death records of relatively wealthy individuals. This collection is an index of a variety of legal documents but is composed of primarily four document types:<ol><li>Grants of Probate: Legal documents that authorize the executor(s) to administer a deceased individual’s estate according to the provisions of the will.</li><li>Letters of Administration: Legal authority for the executor(s) to administer a deceased individual’s estate when no will was made prior to death.</li> <li>Scottish Confirmation: The Scottish equivalent of a grant of probate.</li><li>Eik to a Confirmation: A supplementary document to an existing confirmation for additional assets not listed in the original confirmation.</li></ol>This collection does not contain any copies of the original wills. However, it may be possible to find the copies of wills for individuals found within this index. For individuals who died in England, in or after 1858, their wills may be found by <a href="https://www.gov.uk/search-will-probate">searching the records of the United Kingdom</a>. For individuals who died in Scotland before 1926, their wills may be found through a paid search of <a href="https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/">ScotlandsPeople</a>.While primarily composed of individuals who were living in England and Wales, this collection does include the information of deceased persons living throughout the British Empire, as long as the decedent owned property in England or Wales. While relatively few in number, this collection contains records of individuals who resided in the following countries:Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal, Greece, Jersey, Isle of Man, South Africa, Guernsey, Prussia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Russia, Canada, United States of America, Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, India, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Egypt, China, Japan, Singapore, East Indies, Burma, Turkey, Malta, WestAfrica, Nairobi, East Africa, Syria, Nigeria, Uganda, Monaco, Guyana, Mauritius, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Algiers, Canary Islands, Mesopotamia (Iraq), Macedonia, Cuba, Chile, Brazil, Peru, Jamaica, Mexico, Barbados, Trinidad, Argentina, and the West Indies.

It is estimated that initially about 90-95% of births were reported, but that by 1875 registration was 99%. Since nearly all births were reported, if you are having trouble finding someone in the index, try searching using various given names or initials. In later years, searching on the combination of child’s surname andmother’s maiden name (if known), may also help locate difficult-to-find individuals. If an individual can still not be found, especially in earlier years, try searching local parish records for thechild’s baptismal record.

10294. “England & Wales, Death Index, 1866-1920 & 1984-2005,” MyHeritage, Collection, 10444, MH:S500010.
Civil registration—the government recording of births, marriages, and deaths—began in England and Wales on 1 July 1837. Local registration districts had jurisdiction for recording civil events, but were required to send copies of their records each quarter to the General Register Office (GRO) in London. The GRO created indexes to these records which are organized by event, year, and quarter, and thereunder alphabetically by surname.Information included in the death index changed over the years. The death index for 1866 to 1920 provides the name of deceased, age at death, registration district, and reference information (volume and page numbers). From 1984 to 2005 the index includes the deceased’s birth date rather than age.Information provided in the index can be used to order a copyof the person’s death certificate for a fee from the GRO through their Certificate Ordering Service. Depending on the year, full death certificates may provide: name of deceased, death date, deathplace, age, sex, occupation, cause of death, name of parent if the deceased is a child, informant’s name, residence, and relationship to the deceased, and date of registration.Note: Information recorded on a death certificate is only as accurate as the knowledge of the person reporting it. It is important to pay attention to who the informant was and their relationship to the deceased. The closer the relationship, the more reliable the information likely is.For years where images of the index are available, be sure to consult the image to verify the information presented to you. Sometimes errors happen during the transcription process. For example, a "5" may have inadvertently been transcribed as a "3". Since there is a fee for ordering certificate copies from the GRO, it is especially important to make sure all reference numbers are correct before placing an order.Search tip: If an individual had multiple given names, sometimes only one or two of these names was recorded in the index. In addition, some of the given names may have been recorded by initials only. If you’re having trouble locating someone in the index, try searching by any of the individual’s known given names, initials, or nicknames.

Civil registration — the government recording of births, marriages, and deaths — began in England and Wales on 1 July 1837. Local registration districts had jurisdiction for recording civil events, but were required to send copies of their records each quarter to the General Register Office (GRO) in London. The GRO created indexes to these records which are organized by event, year, and quarter, and thereunder alphabetically by surname.Information included in the index changed over the years. From inception up to June 1911, the birth index lists: name of child, registration district, and reference information (volume and page numbers). Since September 1911 the index also includes the mother’s maiden surname.Information provided in the index can be used to order a copy of the person’s birth certificate for a fee from the GRO through their Certificate Ordering Service. Depending on the year, full birth certificates may provide: name of child, birth date, birthplace, sex, father’s name and occupation, mother’s maiden name, informant’s name, residence, and relationship to the child, and date of registration.Note: For years where images of the index are available, be sure to consult the image to verify the information presented to you. Sometimes errors happen during the transcription process. For example,a "5" may have inadvertently been transcribed as a "3". Since there is a fee for ordering certificate copies from the GRO, it is especially important to make sure all reference numbers are correct before placing an order.Search tip: Compliance with registration laws have always been very good.

The images are split by borough, bride and groom, and then sorted alphabetically. We have linked the bride and groom together, when possible, using the license number.Marriage records are an important genealogical record as they not only record information about the bride, the groom, and their residence when the marriage occurred but often contain additional information such as birth dates, birth places, occupations, and whether single, widowed, or divorced at the time of the marriage. Often a marriage license will also contain information about the parents ofthe bride and groom including the parents’ names and birthplaces. Copies of the original marriage records in New York City are available for order for a fee from the <a href="http://www.cityclerk.nyc.gov/html/marriage/records.shtml">Office of the City Clerk</a>. Marriages 50 or more years old are classified as public documents and are available to all researchers. Marriages less than 50 years old are restricted and only available under certain circumstances that are outlined at the webpage linked to above.

10387. “1939 Register of England & Wales,” MyHeritage, Collection, 10678, MH:S500070.
The 1939 Register was conducted in ways like a census and includes similar information. One important difference for genealogists is the full date of birth is recorded in the 1939 Register for each person whereas the traditional censuses conducted in England and Wales only records each person’s age.The information in this collection was gathered under the authority of the National Registration Act of 1939 – an emergency measure at the start of the Second World War. 65,000 enumerators deliveredthe forms ahead of the official registration day. On Friday, 29 September 1939 (National Registration Day) householders were required to record the requested information on the supplied forms. On thefollowing Sunday and Monday local enumerators visited every household, checked and gathered the completed forms, and issued identity cards to each of the residents in the household.Of the 42 million individuals who are recorded in this collection, 8.2 million records remain closed due to privacy protection requirements, and about 700,000 additional records appear without full names. Records are closed for those individuals who were born less than 100 years ago unless matched to a registered death record. These closed records will be made public and added to this online collection on a yearly basis going forward.* The 1921 Census has not yet been released and is expected to be available online in 2022. The 1951 Census is closed until 2052.
10388. “England & Wales Deaths, GRO Indexes, 1969 - 2007,” MyHeritage, Collection, 10093, MH:S500008.
Each record includes first and last name, date of birth, date of death and district of registration. Records prior to 1984 include only the quarter of the year of death while since 1984 the month of death was recorded.

10432. “1940 United States Federal Census,” MyHeritage, Collection, 10053, MH:S500038.

Naturalization requirements changed significantly in the year 1906. Prior to 1906, naturalization petitions required a limited amount of information, often only collecting the name of the petitioner, ional information.Petitions for naturalization were one of the final steps towards United States citizenship. Of particular interest to genealogists, these petitions sometimes include multiple surnames, often the alternate spellings or their “old country” name as well as their “Americanized” name. Each record within this index contains a Soundex Code that can be used to find the original naturalization records within NARA’s collections.Naturalization petitions filed within the following counties between the years of 1840 and 1950 can be found in this collection. However, dates vary by county. For example, there are no naturalizationpetitions prior to 1871 for the largest county by population: Cook County, Illinois.Counties in Illinois:Boone, Bureau, Carroll, Champaign, Cook, De Kalb, Du Page, Ford, Fulton, Grundy, Henderson, Henry, Iroquois, Jo Daviess, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Knox, Lake, La Salle, Lee, Livingston, Marshall, McHenry, McLean, Mercer, Ogle, Peoria, Putnam, Rock Island, Stark, Stephenson, Tazewell, Vermilion, Warren, Whiteside, Will, Winnebago and Woodford.Counties in Indiana:Benton, Fulton, Jasper, Lake, La Porte, Marshall, Newton, Porter, Pulaski, St. Joseph, and Starke.Counties in Iowa:Allamakee, Appanoose, Benton, Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Cedar, Chickasaw, Clayton, Clinton, Davis, Delaware, Des Moines, Dubuque, Fayette, Floyd, Grundy, Hardin, Henry, Howard, Iowa, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones, Keokuk, Lee, Linn, Louisa, Mahaska, Mitchell, Monroe, Muscatine, Scott, Tama, Van Buren, Wapello, Washington, and Winneshiek.Counties in Wisconsin:Adams, Brown, Calumet, Columbia, Crawford, Dane, Dodge, Door, Florence, Fond du Lac, Forest, Grant, Green, Green Lake, Iowa, Jefferson, Kenosha, Kewaunee, Lafayette, Langlade, Manitowoc, Marinette, Marquette, Menominee, Milwaukee, Oconto, Outagamie, Ozaukee, Portage, Racine, Richland, Rock, Sauk, Shawano, Sheboygan, Walworth, Washington, Waukesha, Waupaca, Waushara, Winnebago, and Wood.

Death certificates represent one of the key primary sources for family information, typically being issued within days of a death and having many details about a persons' life. Frequently, they contain age, birthplace, parents' names and birthplaces and the cause of death.
10483. “U.S. Social Security Death Index (SSDI),” MyHeritage, Collection, 10002, MH:S500007.
10484. “1940 United States Federal Census,” MyHeritage, Collection, 10053, MH:S500038.
